Another great moment: when Benio stops Rokuro. It’s probably not a coincidence that Benio’s hair is purple. Rokuro and Yuto have the classic red oni/ blue oni ( trope!) setup. Then Rokuro does it, and his arm starts laughing. Talismans do magic, so when Yuto does it without a talisman, we didn’t even need Seigen to tell us it’s important. I appreciate the relative simplicity of Sousei no Onmyouji’s magic system. Tl dr: – The truth of the Hinatsuki Tragedy is revealed, the villain appears, and Rokuro & Benio grow closer still #sousei 09 Unlike in some other stories, their relationship really makes sense. The relationship between them has deepened, and they understand each other in a way that neither of them ever understood Yuto. The glowing moment of this episode was undoubtedly the last scene, where Benio apologized to Rokuro and they vowed to get stronger together. That’s when I realized that she’s not being sidelined at all-she’s just going to have to use every bit of her power, determination, and grit to force her older brother to respect her as an exorcist, and damn do I want to see that! Unlike Rokuro, who has a special power, she’s just gotta get better at all the classic stuff than any other exorcist. Then he laid the emotional smack down on her, which was one of the moment which made Yuto seem the most vile. I must admit to some trepidation, because it felt like the story was sidelining her in favor of Rokuro when her nii-sama showed up and completely ignored her. I’m glad the misunderstanding didn’t last for long, and Benio-well. It was still enjoyable, and I’m excited about where the story will go moving forward.Īs usual, it all comes down to the characters of, and the relationship between, Rokuro and Benio. I would have loved a new take on the old formula, but Sousei no Onmyouji need not bow to my wishes. These tried-and-true tropes are used for a reason, and the writers did a good job of making Yuto despicable and menacing. That means it’s no surprise that I and several commenters anticipated where this was going- Yuto is alive, he’s a villain, Rokuro did kill the other Hinatsuki kids but there was a reason for it beyond “Rokuro went crazy,” etc. 
That’s not necessarily bad, the formula works, but it’s hewing to it reliably. There’s no arguing that Sousei no Onmyouji is a by-the-books shounen story. “Intertwining Tragedies – Tragedy Comes With Smile” 「交錯する悲劇 TRAGEDY COMES WITH SMILE」 ( Kousaku Suru Higeki TRAGEDY COMES WITH SMILE)
